Pathway 01 · Surgical

Bariatric Metabolic Surgery.

Personalised surgical options. Structured preparation. Long-term care.

Who this pathway is for

When metabolic bariatric surgery may be considered.

Suitability is assessed individually within a comprehensive metabolic and surgical review, including diet history, family history, existing medical conditions and treatment goals.

  • Body mass index (BMI, a measure based on height and weight) above 35
  • BMI above 30 in the presence of weight-related medical conditions

Weight-related conditions include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Reflux associated with excess weight
  • Joint pain affecting mobility and daily activity

A two-minute guide.

Two quick questions to help you understand whether metabolic bariatric surgery may be an option worth discussing. This is general guidance only, not a medical assessment.

Procedures

A considered surgical decision, made with you.

Procedure selection at Meridian begins with a conversation: about your goals, dietary history, metabolic health and what you have tried before.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy diagram

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

A portion of the outer stomach is removed, leaving a narrow sleeve. Reduces hunger signals and improves satiety.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass diagram

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

The stomach is divided into a small pouch, bypassing the main stomach and the first portion of the small intestine. Often discussed for patients with reflux or type 2 diabetes.

One anastomosis gastric bypass diagram

One anastomosis gastric bypass

Similar to a gastric bypass, but with a single intestinal join rather than two. Offers meaningful weight and metabolic outcomes in selected patients.

Sleeve fundoplication diagram

Sleeve fundoplication

Combines sleeve gastrectomy with anti-reflux surgery. Suited to patients with obesity and significant reflux (GORD, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease).

Gastric bypass with calibration ring diagram

Gastric bypass with calibration ring

A gastric bypass with a small ring to support long-term restriction. Most often considered after weight regain following a previous procedure.

Gastric band removal diagram, band and port removed Gastric band removal diagram, step-by-step

Gastric band removal

Removal of an existing gastric band causing symptoms, discomfort or inadequate results. Can be combined with conversion to a different procedure.

Before surgery

The Meridian Foundation Program.

Building the foundations for surgery, recovery and long-term health.

01

Health

Making sure you are medically ready: investigations, medications, existing health conditions, anaesthetic considerations and anything that needs optimising before surgery.

02

Nutrition

Dietitian-led preparation: the pre-operative very low calorie diet where required, protein and hydration, supplements, and what eating will look like immediately after surgery.

03

Understanding

Nurse and clinical education: what happens on the day, what surgery actually involves, expected symptoms, medications, warning signs and what recovery normally looks like.

04

Readiness

Preparing life around the operation: exercise and movement, time away from work, home support, psychological readiness, realistic expectations and planning for the first few weeks.

Surgery is one part of your treatment. Preparation matters too.

Every Meridian surgical patient completes our Foundation Program before surgery. Together with your surgeon, dietitian and nursing team, we make sure you understand what lies ahead, are appropriately prepared for your procedure and have a clear plan for your recovery.

Process

From first consultation to long-term follow-up.

Metabolic bariatric surgery is a starting point, not an endpoint. The first twelve months involve structured recovery, dietary progression and metabolic review as your body adapts.

01

Surgical consultation

Your first appointment covers your medical history, weight history, eating patterns and goals. We discuss all relevant surgical and medical options together and provide a written plan.

02

Assessment and investigations

Our thorough assessment includes dietitian review, blood tests and body composition. Additional investigations such as gastroscopy or a sleep study may be arranged if needed, as well as physician review where required.

03

The Meridian Foundation Program

Once the decision to proceed is made, you complete our structured preparation phase covering health, nutrition, understanding and readiness, so you arrive at surgery prepared and with a clear plan for recovery.

04

Surgery and hospital stay

Surgery is performed laparoscopically at a connected private hospital. Most patients stay one to two nights. Structured recovery protocols help you return to normal activity as comfortably and quickly as possible.

05

Twelve months of structured follow-up

Scheduled follow-up across the first twelve months covers diet progression, clinical symptom monitoring, nutritional blood tests and supplement review.

06

Long-term metabolic care

Many patients continue with regular reviews beyond the first year. Ongoing care supports durable outcomes and gives you a team to return to as your needs change over time.
